Carraig an Aifrinn, Knockananig, Fermoy Annual Devotions:The annual Carraig an Aifrinn devotions at Knockananig, Fermoy will be held at 4. 00pm on Sunday 20th August.
The reason for this tradition, which goes back hundreds of years, is that towards the end of the 17th century harsh Penal Laws were enacted by the British Parliament against those who didn’t conform to the reformed religion. In Ireland those most affected were Catholics. The laity could not openly practice their religion; bishops, priests and religious were forced to go on the run and were sheltered by the people. Mass was celebrated in secret, secluded, isolated places. One such place was the Mass Rock at Knockananig, Fermoy; hence it is known as Carraig an Aifrinn.
To remember those, both clergy and laity, who risked their lives to attend Mass here many generations have gathered in this sacred place down through the years on the Sunday after the 15th August, the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
