Rev John McCarthy (Deacon): Bishop William Crean has appointed a Deacon to the parish of Fermoy. Rev John McCarthy (Deacon) was ordained to the Permanent Diaconate for the Diocese of Cloyne in October of this year. Deacon John is married to Julie, and they live in Ballintotis, near Midleton. They have two adult children, and recently welcomed their first grandchild to the family.
The ministry of the Deacon in the Roman Catholic Church is one that dates back to the Acts of the Apostles and is one of service in three areas; The word, the Liturgy and Charity. They assist at Holy Mass and may proclaim the gospel and preach a homily. They are both ministers of the Word and the Eucharist. They are ordinary ministers of the Sacrament of Baptism, and can serve as the Church’s witness at the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. They may also preside at funeral rites where there is no Holy Mass. Deacons cannot hear confession, give absolution, anoint the sick or celebrate Holy Mass.
We look forward to welcoming Deacon John to Fermoy parish, next weekend (2nd Sunday of Advent) and we pray that his ministry here will be both fruitful and fulfilling.
