Carraig an Aifrinn Devotions on Sunday 18th August: For many years people have made the journey to the Penal Day Mass Rock at Knockananig, Fermoy where our ancestors gathered, at the risk of their lives, to participate in Mass.
What it was like to be a Catholic in those terrible and terrifying times we can only imagine. Some of the deprivations endured by Catholics: priests could not be educated or ordained in Ireland; Catholics could not become teachers or open a school. They could not own a horse worth more than £5 or land worth more than a certain amount. If a Catholic land-owner died his land was divided between all his sons, or if one son became a Protestant, he would inherit all the land. Catholics were not allowed become members of Parliament or the judiciary or serve in the army or navy.
Catholics gathered in secret in remote areas like Carraig an Aifrinn to hear Mass. Priests were hunted and risked their lives to celebrate mass in these remote places.
Each year the faithful come to Carraig an Aifrinn to remember with pride our ancestors who fearlessly gathered to celebrate the Eucharist. This year’s devotions will be held on Sunday 18th August at 4. 00p.m.
